Favourite watering hole: My favourite watering holes in Edinburgh are The Golden Rule in Polwarth and The Cumberland Bar, in the New Town. They are out of the way, don't get many tourists and serve great beer. It also helps me to keep in touch with the real Edinburgh, since moving out to the suburbs.

Favourite resaurant: My wife and I love the Prestonfield House Hotel. Their restaurant, Rhubarb, is excellent for afternoon tea as well as dinner. It's such a  lovely building, a real gem and not what you expect to find hidden away in a quiet neighbourhood.

Best takeaway: I don't know if it's the best but Pataka in Causewayside does a great biryani. My wife likes to tease me for not ordering anything hotter.

What i love the most about the area: I love the quiet and my neighbours. During last winter we all really got to know each other, while having to clear snow form our street each day. I will miss the easy access to the bypass, it makes travelling to anywhere else in Scotland so easy - as long as you avoid rush hour.

What outdoor activity do you recommend: We have a dog and Blackford Hill is great for walking, you see the same people up there all the time. Braid Hill nearby has a great golf course, with what must be the best panoramic view of Edinburgh city from the 17th hole.

Favourite local business: Has to be the local post office on Ravenscroft Street, Gilmerton. I'm in there several times a week posting drawings to clients, builders and planners across Scotland and the staff are always very friendly.

Best kept secret: the diversity, it's such a mixed neighbourhood with a lot of going on. It isn't your typical dormitory suburb.

About Capital A Architects

I am a Chartered Architect and I specialise in domestic work; Alterations, Extensions and New Build Houses. I get asked to do a lot of work in Edinburgh New Town and, although I am a modernist at heart, I enjoy working with older historic buildings. Most of my clients are ordinary homeowners, with growing families, who want to improve-not-move. It's always great when I can get more space from an existing house and help a family stay in the neighbourhood they enjoy. I write a regular blog and can be found on twitter; social media has really helped me keep in touch with clients and other professionals. I am also a member of the Edinburgh Chartered Architects Network (ECAN) and we offer a free advice service, every second weekend, at the ESPC shop on George Street. All my details are on my website, www.capitalA.co.uk and I offer a free consultation service to anyone with a property in the Edinburgh, Lothian's or Fife.
