About Nithsdale

Nithsdale is the area of Dumfries and Galloway in which the town of Dumfries sits, but other than Dumfries, Nithsdale is a rather rural region, through which the River Nith flows from the Lowther Hills to the Solway Firth.

In this area, you can find Scotland’s highest village, Wanlockhead, at an altitude of 410m. The village is famous for the natural deposits found within the surrounding hills, including lead and gold, and it’s also the site of the second oldest lending library in the UK. The Lowther Hills and Southern Upland Way offer plenty of opportunities to stretch the legs, as well as the only ski centre in the south of Scotland - which also happens to be Scotland’s only community-run ski centre.

Other desirable areas to buy a property in Nithsdale include the pretty villages of Moniaive, Penpont and Thornhill, close to the stunning Drumlanrig Castle. Moniaive is a creative hub in the region, home to many artists, writers and musicians, and it plays host to several festivals every year, including a folk festival, beer festival and gala day. In and around the three villages is artwork by Penpont-based, internationally renowned artist, Andy Goldsworthy.
