The village of Hightae is a thriving community, offering the best of rural living, with a local primary school and community groups. Hightae is also, along with Heck, Greenhill and Smallholm, one of the "Royal Four Towns", so called due to the service of the then residents to the Bruce family in the 1300s. The fishing rights on the River Annan were established by Royal Charter from Robert the Bruce, a free fishing permit is available to village residents.
