When Ross and Hazel Cameron were looking for a family home in Hawick in the early 90s, they both wanted a traditional property. It’s no wonder that West Langlands caught their eye. Victorian grandeur and beautiful period details provide this C-listed five bedroom semi-detached house in the Borders with plenty of historic charm.

History

Originally built in 1860 for one of Hawick’s mill-owning dynasties, the original mansion house was converted into two properties in the 1950s, with West Landlands retaining the major portion, including the vestibule with a colourful and ornate patterned tiled floor, original entrance hall and majestic staircase.

During the 1920s the house was owned by local Liberal Member of Parliament, Sir Thomas Henderson and his wife, Lady Henderson, whose fondness for cruises and Art Deco design influences apparently resulted in an en suite bathroom inspired by one in the Queen Mary cruise liner.

Lady Henderson also installed the picturesque summerhouse in the garden as a discreet place to sunbathe. Famous houseguests during this era are said to have included Lloyd George.

A spacious home

However, it wasn’t just the history and traditional features of the property that drew the Camerons to it. Ross said: “We loved the space in West Langlands, as well as the garden and outlook. It was a very suitable family house and the perfect place for us.”

Despite occupying just half its original size, the property is exceptionally spacious, making it ideal for a growing family. Arranged over three levels, it provides elegant reception rooms and entertaining spaces along with a well-equipped dining kitchen, which the current owners extended to create a large social space for the whole family.

Drawing room and dining room

Ross’ favourite room in the house is the downstairs drawing room, it’s exceptionally light, airy and spacious, with a beautiful bay window. Ross said: “It’s a fantastic room for entertaining and large parties.” It also features ornate plasterwork, wood-panelling and a marble fireplace.

However, the dining room is one of the most interesting and unusual rooms in the property, featuring Art Nouveau-themed mahogany and teak carvings.

Gardens

The gardens are undoubtedly one of the main highlights of the home and would be highly appealing to keen gardeners. There is a greenhouse, potting shed, log store, vegetable patch and a large lawn area which recently hosted a marquee for 120 people, making it ideal for hosting events and weddings. The property further benefits from a summerhouse and garage.

Location

South-facing and positioned on a hill just five minutes from the centre of Hawick, the property offers wonderful views over the surrounding area. It’s a convenient location for accessing Edinburgh, Newcastle and Carlisle being with all three cities just a 90-minute drive away.

Plus, Tweedbank railway station is just a half hour drive away. It therefore offers the best of both worlds, positioned in a peaceful town in the heart of the beautiful Borders, yet major cities are within commuting distance.
