About Edinburgh West

Edinburgh West is a mix of residential suburbs, business premises and industrial estates. Home to the ‘haunted’ Dalry House and Caledonian Crescent’s Victorian-era swimming bath Dalry Swim Centre, Dalry’s historic roots appear to meld seamlessly with modern-day living. It's also a more affordable area compared to the rest of Edinburgh.

Some of the enclaves making up the constituency of Edinburgh West are Roseburn, Ardmillan, and Carrick Knowe, across to Murrayburn and Sighthill with Balgreen, Stenhouse and Parkhead in its midst.

You'll also find Edinburgh Napier University's Sighthill Campus in Edinburgh West, which is home to the university's School of Applied Sciences and the School of Health & Social Care.

Growth and development

Western Edinburgh Neighbourhood Partnership (NP) are involved in a local community plan as are the other 11 Neighbourhood Partnerships; their goal is to look at various ways of improving lifestyles within the locale. Refresher plans for the period 2014-107 are underway and if there are any suggestions from the general public, these can be entertained by the core membership of local Councillors and representatives from other organisations such as the Police, Health and local voluntary sector.

With a population of around 45,000 spread throughout the area, the Western Edinburgh NP support initiatives related to local needs and administer grants that are aimed at supporting community plans. There is also the ongoing West Edinburgh Planning Framework which the Scottish Government have set out as a long term strategy vision for the constituency.

Considered to be nationally important, the key targets of the plan include economic development, global connectivity, transport and environment.

Lifestyle and entertainment

Edinburgh West is a small residential area but it still has a generous selection of entertainment for its size.

Murrayfield stadium is on the edge of its boundaries. On top of several rugby games a year, the venue also hosts some of the biggest names in music. Past acts have included the Spice Girls, Rolling Stones, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

The football team Heart of Midlothian also calls Edinburgh West their home, with the Tynecastle stadium situated in the Gorgie area.

Golf more your thing? Golfers can visit Carrick Knowe Golf Course for their weekend games. The course is a Par 70, 18-holes course with 9-hole twilight option. There is also a golf shop selling golf accessories, hot and cold drinks, and confectionery.
